Buildbase Honda Racing dominated the opening round of the MX Nationals at Preston Docks on Sunday with Graeme Irwin and Martin Barr taking the overall wins in the MX1 and MX2 classes.
The Irish pairing were backed up by team-mates Kristian Whatley – who ended the day third in MX1 – and Lewis Trickett who came home sixth in MX2 after both riders produced impressive performances in race two following a tough opening moto.

Making his debut on the all-new Honda CRF450R, the 29-year-old ran 3-2 in his heat races before taking the holeshot in the 14-lap Main Event and holding the lead until the halfway mark. A collision with another rider saw him lose valuable places but he quickly remounted and regained his rhythm to come home third.

The 28-year-old former champion, third at round nine in Newcastle a fortnight ago, was in great form in the Steel City and after qualifying well he progressed to the Main Event with a comfortable 4-2 scorecard in his heat races.
